The Michigan State Police released final 2025 traffic-crash data on August 6, 2026. The statewide numbers show progress in some areas and serious concern in others.

Michigan had 290,221 crashes in 2025

MSP reported that total crashes increased slightly to 290,221. Roadway deaths fell to 1,065, a 3% decrease from 1,099 in 2024.

Distracted and drug-involved fatalities decreased

According to MSP, distracted-driving-involved fatalities fell from 65 to 44, and drug-involved fatalities fell from 272 to 210. Teen fatalities also declined.

Vulnerable road users and commercial vehicles moved the wrong direction

Pedestrian deaths increased to 184, bicyclist deaths increased to 35, and commercial-motor-vehicle-involved fatalities increased to 128. Those categories deserve particular attention because the injuries in these crashes are often severe.

Statistics do not decide an individual case

Statewide data helps identify risk, but a civil claim still depends on the specific crash: fault, medical evidence, insurance coverage, vehicle data, witnesses and damages.
