Commercial-motor-vehicle crashes are a major concern in Michigan. MSP’s final 2025 data reported 128 commercial-motor-vehicle-involved fatalities, up 16% from 110 in 2024.

Truck cases involve more than the driver

A semi may be connected to a driver, motor carrier, trailer owner, broker, shipper, maintenance provider or other company. The relationships and responsibilities vary from case to case.

Electronic and company records matter

Potential evidence can include electronic logging device data, engine-control or event data, dashcams, driver qualification files, hours-of-service records, dispatch messages, inspection reports, maintenance records, cargo documents and post-crash testing.

Why early preservation is important

Some commercial data is retained only for defined periods or may be overwritten in the ordinary course of business. A preservation letter can identify categories of evidence that should not be destroyed while the claim is investigated.

Serious injuries can involve multiple insurance layers

Truck cases may involve large medical losses, wage loss, future care and significant liability coverage. Michigan no-fault benefits still need to be analyzed separately from the tort claim.
