Michigan drivers choosing or renewing auto insurance should pay attention to Qualified Health Coverage, often abbreviated QHC. The definition matters because some PIP medical options require qualifying health coverage for the named insured or household members.
What changed for the 2026-2027 period?
Michigan DIFS states that for July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, the deductible threshold used in the QHC definition is $6,579 or less per covered individual. The health coverage also generally cannot exclude or limit coverage for motor-vehicle accident injuries.
Why does this matter after a crash?
The PIP medical choice on a policy can affect which insurer pays accident-related medical expenses and how much PIP medical coverage is available. Michigan offers six PIP medical options, ranging from unlimited coverage to lower limits and qualifying exclusions or opt-out choices.
Keep your coverage records
After a serious accident, policy declarations, PIP selection forms, QHC letters and health-insurance records can be important. Do not assume that the insurance card in your wallet answers every coverage question.
